Advertising and the Internet

I chose to discuss this advertisment of Beyonce Knowles as the spokesperson for the makeup line, "Loreal Cosmetics."In this Advertisement, there is a quote by Beyonce who says, "This makeup is so true to my own skin, it actually mimics it." According to section B of the textbook people must either reject or accept claims. Viewers will either reject or accept this claim from personal experience or other sources. People might have already tried this foundation and had good results. Or they might have tried it, and have had negative results. Fans of beyonce knowles might accept the claim simply because they trust that Beyonce would never be a spokesperson for Loreal unless she really believed and used the products. This advertisement is considered an  argument according to section C because many advertisements are arguments with conclusions telling people to buy the product. The premise of the Loreal advertisement is that Beyonce uses Loreal foundation and she loves it. Therefore, people should buy the foundation.

  1. When I saw your ad I thought of the doctor the tobacco company hired in section B. The tobacco company is paying the doctor. The doctor claims there is no proof smoking is addictive. L’Oreal hired Beyonce. She says the foundation works. The book says “we can accept a claim made by a reputable authority whom we can trust as an expert on this kind of claim and who has no motive to mislead.” You can consider Beyonce an expert with make up because she might wear it a lot. She may have a motive to mislead though since she is a spokesperson for L’Oreal. I think I would have to suspend judgement until I could ask Beyonce which foundation she uses on a daily basis. With the reasons you have though, Beyonce’s statement is based on her personal experience and that ‘is the most reliable source.”

  2. You understand the section about the personal experience well. I really like the way you use the above example because it is a great example for analyzing an argument. I never thought that advertisements as form of argument. However, I have to admit that advertisements' purpose is to convince people or to get people use or buy the products or service. Therefore, advertisements are just a fancy word for "argument". There are bad and good advertisements just like strong and weak arguments. The example you give is a valid and good argument because the company uses a famous person to increase the effect of advertising.

  3. Yeah I'm really commenting here cause I think Beyonce is super hot, but I like your explanations thought. They really get into the nuances of the ad. Celebrity endorsements are kinda cliche but they are effective. Having someone as beautiful as beyonce will make girls all over the world wanting the product more so than not at all. I like how you broke down the quote according to the books guidelines. I see that makes it easier to find out what parts of the subject are being used. Well overall thats a good job on the advertising thing.
