Subjective and Objective Claims

According to the reading, a subjective claim depends on a person opinion or feels. An objective claim does not depend on how someone feels or thinks. Here are examples of a subjective and objective claim:

My boyfriend and I were talking on the phone today, and we were discussing how he is liking his new living situtation at San Francisco State University. My boyfriend told me, "Living in my own apartment is way better than living in a dorm." His claim is an example of a subjective claim because he is making that statement from his own personal experiences from living in a dorm his freshman year. His claim may or may not be true depending on the persons beliefs and expeirences.

Yesterday, when I was talking to my mom in the kitchen. We were discussing some of our favorite movies, and I told her that the movie, 27 Dresses is one of my favorite movies. She then asked me when the movie was released and I told her, "27 Dresses was released in 2008." This is an example of an objective claim because it does not depend on what someone believes in.

  1. Hey Rossi,
i like how you introduced and gave your definition of what a subjective and objective claim is. I feel that what your boyfriend told you about his living situation is identical to what my girlfriend has said to me. She also said living in an apartment is better. I asked her how? And her response was, "it just is." lol. So we had similar stories. And i like how you talked about what your favorite movie is. No matter how good the movie is, its undisputed on the date it was released.

  2. Hello Rossi,

Your explanation for both claims were thorough and clear. I agree that a person's living arrangements are personal aspects that cannot be categorized as either right or wrong. Everyone is brought up in a different environment and each person becomes accustomed to their own. So saying that one is better than the other cannot be objective.
Your example of an objective claim was very direct. It clearly shows the difference between subjective and objective claims. No one can argue against what year a movie was released if the facts are there. The only way it could refuted is maybe if the movie was released at a different time in a different country since you did not specify where it was released in 2008. But that is relevant since we can assume that you live in California.
    Thank you! :)
